Lately, a great deal has been written about the Saab brand in the media. We would like to clarify certain facts.
It is important to advise that two parties – Saab AB and Saab Automobile AB – use the brand Saab. Even though partly sharing the same proud history, the two companies have been operating separately since 1996.
The history of the Saab brand:
- Saab AB and Saab Automobile AB share a history within "Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget" (Swedish Aeroplane Aktiebolaget), which was founded in 1937.
- In 1990, the passenger car division within former Saab-Scania became a separate company, Saab Automobile AB, co-owned by Saab-Scania and General Motors, 50 percent each.
- In 1995, the Saab-Scania Group was divided into two companies, Saab AB and Scania AB. The car manufacturer Saab Automobile AB remained a company within Saab AB, 50 percent owned by Saab AB and 50 percent owned by General Motors.
- In 1996 Saab AB transferred its 50 percent share of Saab Automobile to the Nordic-based industrial holding company Investor.
- In 2000 General Motors acquired the remaining 50 percent from Investor and the car manufacturer Saab Automobile AB became 100 percent owned by General Motors.
- In February 2010, Spyker Cars N.V (from May 2011 Swedish Automobile N.V) acquired Saab Automobile AB from General Motors. Swedish Automobile was listed on the Dutch stock exchange.
- Saab AB, the defence and security company, is listed on NASDAQ OMX Stockholm.
Today, Saab AB and the car manufacturer Saab Automobile AB are two completely independent companies with unrelated ownership. However, the Saab name and brand is used by both Saab AB and Saab Automobile AB.
