South Africa orders 28 Gripen
In September 1999, South Africa became the first export customer for the Saab/BAe Gripen. The order comprises 28 aircraft.
On 16 November 1999, Saab made a public bid to acquire all shares in Celsius, thus creating the largest Nordic defense group and competence center.

During the year, Saab also acquired Nyge Aero, a leading military services and support company; Barracuda Technologies, an information warfare company that develops signature management equipment; and SaabCelsius Transponder Tech, a joint venture with Celsius that develops satellite-based positioning and identification systems for ships, aircraft and other vehicles.
The last Saab turboprop regional airliners were delivered in mid-1999.
First deliveries in the Airbus A340-500/600 aerostructures program began during the year.
