The 787 Dreamliner was launched by Boeing in April 2004. The fuel-efficient 787 is a family of three airplanes designed to serve on routes between 6,500 and 15,700 kilometres. To date the total number of announced orders and commitments is 293 airplanes from 23 announced customers. The maiden flight with 787 is scheduled in 2007 and the first delivery is planned to 2008.
For the 787 program in general, composite will be used for all structural parts. Saab Aerostructures will design, develop and manufacture all cargo and access doors for the 787. The business unit has experience from supplying major aerostructures for military as well as commercial aircraft programs.
- The development of the doors has already started. We have had a team in Seattle, USA since the summer 2004. We have already started the manufacturing of the first test-units, says Pontus Kallén.
Revenues over the lifetime of the agreement are expected to reach a multi-million dollar level and the first unit will be delivered to Boeing in 2006.
- Being a partner at Tier 1 level with Boeing will strengthen Saab Aerostructures’ presence in the aerostructures market, says Pontus Kallén.
