Autonomous machines increase competitiveness

As part of an effort to make Saab Aerostructures’ operation more competitive and cost effective, the business unit is now using autonomous machines in production. This is so that machines can run even outside the standard shift system.

“Our continued focus on being competitive and cost effective calls for innovative thinking and an ability to find the best solution in our production area. It is now clear we have taken a major step by using autonomous processing,” says Leif Nelén, head of detail manufacture.

The NC machines now being run autonomously are primarily being used to process items for the mid and outer fixed leading edge for A380, as well as Gripen and Boeing details. The new production system is based on safe methods, process monitoring, and the ability to load buffers prior to processing, thus enabling long processing sequences without having to change the settings.

“We’ve not only focused on developing the efficiency of the production methods, but also on utilising our resources 24 hours a day all year round in order to enhance our competitiveness,” Leif Nelén concludes.
