Saab helps BAE Systems with technology transfer

Recently, several representatives from BAE Systems and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (H.A.L) visited Saab Aerostructures to study in detail the manufacture of the Rudder for the Hawk trainer. The purpose of the visit was to learn as much as possible about the manufacture of the Hawk Rudder to assist them in the manufacture themselves in the future.

India has ordered 64 Hawk trainers from BAE Systems, and as part of the agreement, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will be responsible for the manufacture of 42 aircraft.
“Saab has manufactured the rudder for a number of years. We recently delivered ship set number 100 to BAE Systems, and our cooperation has worked extremely well. BAE Systems has in place a training program with H.A.L to assist them in preparation for the Indian built Hawk Fast Jet trainers. As BAE Systems do not manufacture the Rudders themselves, they asked Saab if we could help with shop site visit”, explained Geoff Thompson, Marketing and Sales Director at Saab Aerostructures.

H.A.L sent three representatives and followed the manufacturing through the various processes during two weeks. BAE Systems provided the formal theoretical training and H.A.L representatives were present during the various manufacturing stages at Saab.

Andy Rawson, Offshore Logistics Manager BAE Systems at Brough, had the following to say after the trip;
“The two weeks training was well received by the H.A.L representatives and they were impressed by the site and the product manufactured. The training plan was professionally managed and the openness and integrity of those assisting the training was greatly appreciated.  I would like to take the opportunity on behalf of BAE Systems Hawk Op’s training to thank Saab and those involved in assisting BAE Systems with its training obligation on this contract”.
