Saab delivers first door for Boeing 787

Recently, Saab delivered the first door for the Boeing 787. In total, Saab will supply seven doors for each aircraft.

“We have worked hard to get this ready, and it feels great to deliver the first door”, says Per Westling, Team leader Assembly, Saab Aerostructures.
The door, which has been delivered to Spirit in Wichita, USA, is one of a total of four access doors which are part of each shipset. The Crew Escape Door is, as the name suggests, an evacuation door for the crew and is located in the front part of the aircraft.
In addition to the access doors, two Large Cargo Doors and a Bulk Cargo Door make up the shipset.

Representatives from Boeing were on site at Saab in conjunction with the delivery in order to make a Source Inspection.
“This is a big accomplishment and the beginning of a long prosperous relationship between Saab and Boeing”, said Michael Jacobson, SPQ Field Representative – Europe, Boeing.

Michael Jacobson was very pleased with the door that he had just inspected.
“It looks great and it is a result of a lot of work from a lot of people.”

The same day as the first door was delivered another important step in the Boeing project was taken, as assembly of the Large Cargo Door started on a specially built line.

More deliveries from Saab are due.
“In total we have 21 different delivery objects in each shipset of which seven are doors. Some of the delivery objects have already been delivered and we will deliver the remainder one by one, says Mathias Larsson, deputy Program Manager, Saab Aerostructures.”
