Alliance to reduce the aviation sector’s environmental impact

With its world-leading aviation expertise, Saab is contributing to a major development program initiated by the EU Commission and Clean Sky JTI.

The Advisory Council for Aeronautical Research in Europe (ACARE) has formulated a number of safety, efficiency and environmental goals for European air traffic by 2020. One of the overall goals is to reduce carbon dioxide and nitric oxide emissions and noise by 20 to 40 percent. Clean Sky is the industry’s response to how it feels these goals should be achieved. Saab is one of twelve European aircraft companies behind the program and will participate in the development of a new smart wing for the next generation of large commercial aircraft.

About Clean Sky

  • Clean Sky is a Joint Technology Initiative (JTI), a new type of project created by the European Commission where organizations, government agencies and businesses share responsibility for strategic, large-scale projects
  • The program is planned between 2008 and 2014 and has a total budget of EUR 1.6 billion, with the industry and the EU each paying half. Saab expects to invest around EUR 15 million in the Clean Sky program
  • Business units in the Aeronautics segment will primarily be affected by Clean Sky projects. Other units may get involved at a later stage. Besides Saab, Clean Sky members include Airbus, Dassault, Alenia, Eurocopter, AgustaWestland, Thales, Liebherr, Rolls-Royce, Safran, EADS CASA and Fraunhofer
