Environmental management

The Heads of each business unit are to ensure that operations are run in accordance with legal requirements and Saab’s environmental policy.

From group level to business units

Environmental work is organized at Group level, where an environmental function is responsible primarily for planning, overseeing and improving environmental work, and at the business area level, where the practical aspects of environmental work are carried out. Practical work can be adapted to the specific conditions in each business unit.

Responsibility for compliance with Saab’s policies and applicable laws rests with the business units, which have access to an environmental manager and/or coordinator. The business units also have environmental goals for their own products and operations. These goals are monitored and evaluated within the framework of the units’ business systems.

Integration by Environmental Management Systems

Environmental management systems (EMS) have been introduced, or are being implemented, at business units. To facilitate the integration of environmental matters in day-to-day operations, the EMS must be integrated in the unit’s management system. If a unit does not need a full EMS, all personnel must have clearly defined procedures for dealing with the applicable legal regulations and customer requirements.

Certified systems

Certain business units and companies, such as Saab Aerotech, Austrian Aerospace, Saab Barracuda, Saab Bofors Dynamics, Saab Bofors Test Center, Combitech, Saab Communication, Saab Microwave Systems, Saab Space, Saab Shared Services, Saab Training Systems and Saab Underwater Systems, have certified their systems, while others have systems that comply with ISO 14001 but are not certified. Saab Aerosystems, Saab Avitronics and Saab Systems will certify their environmental management systems during 2008.

Environmental requirements in the supplier chain

Since a large proportion of Saab’s products are developed and manufactured by external companies, Suppliers’ environmental efforts are of fundamental importance in enabling Saab to fulfill its environmental responsibility to customers and authorities. Therefore, for the time being, Saab is implementing new environmental requirements in its supplier chain.
