Industrial co-operation programmes

In major contracts, particularly in the defence sector, customers require extensive offset and industrial co-operation programmes, as compensation for the large investments they are making.

Requirements for industrial co-operation can represent up to 100 percent of the sales contract value, sometimes even more. This means that Saab as a supplier must commit to investments, production or research and development. This can be done through the direct participation of the country’s industry in the production and development of e.g. the Gripen system, or by Saab committing to generate investments in other industry sectors.

Need for local knowledge

The design of an industrial co-operation programme requires knowledge of the national economy as well as of prospective industrial partners in the country. On occasion, the buying country wants strategic investments in particular industrial areas that are identified as national strategic areas. In other cases, regional or local industrial development may be the priority.

Industrial co-operation programmes can also involve transfer of know-how or investments in government sectors such as trade, research, education, energy, environment or IT. In all of these scenarios, local advice from Saab’s consultants is a pre-requisite for success.
