Gripen - generating economic growth

An investment in the Gripen fighter system could also be a generator of economic and industrial growth. Saab’s offset and industrial co-operation programmes are designed to support the nation’s desire to enhance its defence technology industrial base, promote micro-economic development and contribute to macro-economic advancements.

No two countries have identical offset requirements. Some nations prefer investments in infrastructure, some seek workshare on specific industrial programmes, while others look for a combination of investments, skills development, technology transfer and jobs.

In Hungary, for instance, Saab and other Swedish companies in the Saab network made large offset investments. Even years before Hungary signed up for its new Gripen fighters. One of the companies was Electrolux who made Hungary a production hub for Europe, resulting in thousands of new jobs and increased export revenues.

Recently the Swedish government decided to acquire the latest version of the system Gripen E, and in February Saab signed an agreement with the Swedish Defence Material Administration about development and modification of Gripen E. The agreement ensures that Gripen E will be developed, produced and delivered to Sweden and Switzerland in time and on budget. This means that it is also ready for delivery to the world market.
