Missile verification completed

A successful firing exercise conducted by Saab and Diehl BGT Defence, marks the end of an extensive verification of the new generation Surface-to-Surface Missile RBS15 Mk3.

10/28/2008 | The RBS15 Mk3 System, with its capability to combat ships as well as land targets, is soon ready for delivery. The system has been contracted by Sweden, Germany and Poland and onboard installations have already been commissioned.

Anti-ship mission at long range

RBS15 Mk3 was successfully launched at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration test range in northern Sweden at the beginning of October, witnessed by government delegations from several nations. The test verified:

  • the complete function of the missile system, including the priming of the missile from the Missile Engagement Planning System
  • the target seeker capability
  • the high-G terminal phase manoeuvres

The new variable thrust turbojet engine was used to automatically adapt the speed to hit the target at a pre-defined time, as well as support the terminal manoeuvres with maximum thrust and speed.

Two marine targets

The missile cruised over water in both fixed flight level control as well as automatic sea-state adaptation. The missile flew 165 km via 25 waypoints and it was primed to engage two marine targets, including re-attack, and one land target before hitting the final marine target.

The navigation system, using INS (Inertial Navigation System) supported by military GPS, accurately followed the pre-planned trajectory and the final target impact, where the missile was controlled by the target seeker. It easily met all expectations and requirements, proving the system performance in both the anti-ship as well as in the land attack mission.

Saab Bofors Dynamics, Sweden, and Diehl BGT Defence, Germany, have a cooperation agreement encompassing development, production and marketing of the RBS15 Mk3.
