2/26/2008 | In the Autumn FMV started procurement for a virtual simulator for gunnery training for the Swedish Army. A requirement was that the training installation was mobile so that it could be used in deployments overseas. Saab Training Systems capability for robust designs, system integration and weapons expertise together with KMW’s well developed software were key factors for being awarded the business.
Saab Training Systems main supplier
Saab Training Systems is the main supplier and will be responsible for integrating KMW’s virtual simulator with Saabs anti-tank weapons system NLAW. The order is for ten RB57 gunnery training systems which will be used partly to train approximately 800 users and partly for training during deployment. The deal consists of a product section and a support section. The total value of the contract is over 100 MSEK.
- “We are proud that together with KMW we can offer the Armed Forces cost effective training. Through this collaboration we reinforce our range with new training capability to our most important customers”, says Johan Ohlson, President of Saab Training Systems.

Training is ever more important
Training is an increasingly important part of the preparations before and during international deployments. The requirement for training equipment on deployments is increasing. Peace-keeping operations often last longer than anticipated and maintaining expertise after several months on deployment is important.
Leading within live training
Saab Training Systems is a leading player within live training. Training occurs in the field and the environment and the systems are the same as those that the soldier would be used to in a deployment. A more realistic exercise means that a soldier’s experience and ability are tested.
Live exercises are expensive. Especially with vehicles and large forces. Therefore, virtual simulators, where the soldier’s basic training is carried out indoors in special premises, are an important part of training.
KMW from Germany is one of the leading suppliers within vehicle simulation and has a very well developed range of virtual simulations.
