Saab in extensive Norwegian cooperation
Today, Sweden’s offer was submitted regarding Norway’s tender for new fighter aircraft. If they choose Gripen, Saab promises extensive industrial cooperation with a number of Norwegian companies.

4/28/2008 | The Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) handed over Sweden’s offer on behalf of the Swedish Government. The 48 Gripen next generation fighters that Sweden has offered will meet all the requirements that Norway has specified in the tender documentation for its new fighter aircraft. Norway expects to come to a decision early in 2009.
Extensive cooperation within a number of businesses
In connection with a Gripen deal with Norway, Saab is planning for extensive cooperation with Norwegian industry; generating work openings and technology transfers within the defence industry as well as a number of other businesses. As part of this, a number of cooperation agreements with Norwegian companies were announced in Oslo today:
- Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS
- Thales Norway
- Nammo
- Simrad Optronics ASA
- Natech, and
- TotAlgroup
“We are convinced that our offer provides a historical opportunity for strong and long lasting relations between Norway and Sweden in defence and security related areas as well as a broad range of industrial sectors. Up to date we have identified more than 200 partners in all of the Norwegian fylker. Today we can guarantee an industrial cooperation in excess of 100 percent of order value. Furthermore we can see a potential business value of at least an additional 100 percent within defence and non-defence sectors,” says Saab’s CEO Åke Svensson.
Parts of the cooperation agreements are dependent on Norway purchasing Gripen.

The cooperation agreement with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace
The cooperation agreement with Kongsberg is an important part of the cooperation and valued at more than 12 billion NOK, spread over 10-15 years. The cooperation with Kongsberg is extensive and the focus is on the areas of composites and missiles. Prioritised projects are the cooperation within the Gripen programme and Kongsberg’s newly developed anti-ship missile JSM.
More cooperations
Saab is also cooperating with Norwegian companies within optics and system development for Unmanned Vehicles, UAVs, (Simrad), communications equipment (Norwegian Thales), ammunition for Gripen (Nammo), cabling, panels and racks (Natech), as well as design and structural parts for Gripen (ToTAlgroup) and more.
