Training for Urban Terrain Operations
Today, the ability to operate in urban environments is vital for a modern army, and soldiers must be prepared for challenges such as fast-changing three-block-scenarios and a set of new irrational and asymmetric threats.
Saab has extended the capability of the Deployable Instrumented Training System to meet the need for tactical urban training typically for squad/platoon and company level exercises. This capability is also replicated in the smaller version of DITS called Manpack which is a field laptop version for squad/platoon level training.
The Urban Training Package for DITS enables a MOUT training area to be depicted as a realistic 3D model in the during and after action review (AAR) modes of the system together with the instrumented players both in and outside the buildings. It has the capability to simulate the effects of direct and indirect fires on the occupants of the buildings. Differing protection levels to fires are simulated within the buildings with primary and secondary effects.
Any available urban environment, at home-station or deployed, can be readily made in to an instrumented training area by simply placing out battery powered devices that track instrumented players in the buildings when regular GPS contact is lost. Another set of battery powered devices are used to detect laser based direct fire engagements and transmit the effect to players.
The Urban Training Package facilitates a 3D visual feedback of large scale tactical training depicting the battle flow of the players (dismounts & armor) moving from the open in to the streets of the urban terrain, the location of civilians and insurgents, direct and indirect engagements together with occupied and cleared buildings. The AAR provides a post exercise situational awareness feedback that dramatically improves the learning curve of dealing with the challenge of fighting in the streets and buildings of an urban area together with the support by fire coordination.
